The Detroit Lions should seriously consider drafting Shedeur Sanders if he falls to the 6th or 7th round. While it’s highly unlikely that a quarterback of his caliber drops that far, the value at that stage in the draft would be too good to ignore. The Lions’ current quarterback situation lacks a solid contingency plan. Jared Goff is the established starter, but if he were to suffer an injury, the team’s season could unravel due to the absence of a reliable backup.

Hendon Hooker, while once seen as a developmental prospect, has not shown signs of being a future contributor. With limited reps, concerns about his health, and no meaningful path to the field, it seems increasingly unlikely that he will ever play a significant role in Detroit. Rather than continue to invest time and roster space into a quarterback who may never see the field, the Lions should look to bring in fresh talent who fits their system and timeline.

Shedeur Sanders has displayed poise, strong decision-making, and leadership at Colorado. Though he may need time to adjust to the NFL level, he has shown flashes of the mental and physical tools required for success. If he slips to the later rounds due to concerns over offensive line protection, scheme, or level of competition, that could actually present Detroit with a steal. Drafting Sanders wouldn’t signal the end of Goff’s time in Detroit, but it would give the Lions a young, high-upside option to groom behind their veteran starter. At worst, Sanders becomes a capable backup. At best, he could develop into a future starter or valuable trade asset. In the 6th or 7th round, that’s a calculated risk worth taking. The Lions can’t afford to stand still at the backup quarterback position.
