NASCAR veteran and analyst Kyle Petty recently weighed in on the legacies of current drivers Joey Logano and Kyle Larson, offering a bold prediction that has sparked debate across the racing world. Petty affirmed his belief that despite their undeniable talent and achievements, neither Logano nor Larson will reach the prestigious 60-win milestone in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Currently, both drivers boast impressive resumes. Logano, a two-time Cup Series champion, has consistently been a top-tier competitor since joining Team Penske. Larson, known for his raw speed and versatility across racing disciplines, claimed the 2021 championship in dominant fashion and continues to impress fans with his aggressive style.
However, Petty cited several factors behind his assertion. He pointed to the increasing competitiveness of the Cup Series, changes in team dynamics, and the evolving nature of NASCAR itself, which no longer allows for the same kind of sustained dominance seen in previous eras. He also highlighted how modern drivers face tougher competition across a more level playing field, reducing the likelihood of any one driver reaching historic win totals.
With legends like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson setting high benchmarks, reaching 60 wins is a feat few can achieve. While Petty acknowledged that both Logano and Larson may still add many victories to their records, he remains firm in his stance: they’re exceptional drivers, but the era of 60-win legends may be behind us.
Only time will tell if he’s right.
