On Day 1 of the Tennessee Titans’ mandatory minicamp, rookie quarterback Cam Ward and veteran defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons engaged in a spirited back-and-forth that drew attention across the field. While it may have looked heated to onlookers, Simmons later revealed the jawing was premeditated. According to him, he told Ward days earlier he’d be coming after him verbally, looking to test the rookie’s mental toughness and competitive spirit.

Ward didn’t flinch.

Throughout practice, Ward stood tall and fired back at Simmons with confidence, never allowing the veteran’s intensity to shake his composure. The verbal sparring added a competitive edge to the session, and rather than shrink under the pressure, Ward used it as fuel. He had one of his best performances of camp, showcasing poise in the pocket and precision with the football.

Simmons, a team leader known for his intensity and high standards, walked away impressed. He praised Ward’s demeanor, noting that the rookie’s ability to stay unfazed in the face of pressure was a sign of maturity beyond his years. “He didn’t back down. That’s what you want to see,” Simmons reportedly said.

Moments like this matter in building team chemistry and setting the tone for the season. For Ward, it was a chance to earn early respect.
