“I want to replace and completely surpass the legendary Richard Petty, because I have more to prove, more to give, and a new legacy to build.”
The remark, which Wallace delivered during an interview about his long-term goals in the sport, was intended to convey ambition and determination. However, it has sparked heated backlash from traditional NASCAR fans who revere Petty as an untouchable icon. Richard Petty, famously known as “The King,” holds a record 200 career wins and has long been considered one of the sport’s greatest figures.
Many fans took to social media, accusing Wallace of disrespect and arrogance, interpreting his comments as dismissive of Petty’s legacy rather than aspirational. Some even called for a public apology.
Wallace, who drives for 23XI Racing—a team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin—has frequently pushed boundaries and spoken out on social issues. While admired by many for his courage and authenticity, he remains a polarizing figure in the racing world.
In response to the backlash, Wallace clarified:“I meant no disrespect to Richard Petty. He paved the way for all of us. But every driver dreams of greatness. I just want to carve my own path and reach the highest levels.”
