What actually happened

  • Bowman was the only Hendrick driver who didn’t advance past the opening round of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.
  • After his elimination, HMS moved Daniel Bach, who had been front‑tire changer on Bowman’s #48 car, over to William Byron’s #24 team.
  • Jeff Cordero, Byron’s front tire changer, was reassigned elsewhere, etc.

So it was a swap of personnel, presumably to strengthen the teams still in championship contention.

Why the reassignment makes sense

Here are key reasons HMS likely made that decision:

  1. Maximize Resource Allocation in the Playoffs
Once a driver is no longer in playoff contention, there’s less direct return on investing top pit‑crew performance for them (in terms of championship potential). HMS would prefer to channel their best pit crew capability toward drivers still alive in the contest, in hopes of winning or going deeper in the playoffs.
  2. Reward / Leverage High‑Performing Personnel
Daniel Bach had shown competence; moving him to Byron’s team could make a measurable difference in pit stop speed, consistency, and margin ‑ very important in tight playoff races. For a team like HMS, small pit gains can translate into big track position swings.
  3. Addressing Pit Crew Weaknesses
Reports said Bowman’s pit stops in recent playoff races had significant issues: a 40‑second stop caused by an air hose issue at Darlington, and a poor stop at World Wide Technology Raceway.
By reassigning, HMS also attempts to lessen the risk of further errors affecting Byron’s playoff push by inserting a reliable front tire changer into that team.
  4. “Fresh” Approach / Momentum
Sometimes a change in personnel (crew swaps) can offer renewed energy, single‑race focus, or psychological boost. Bowman’s crew had been under pressure; reassigning personnel can be a reset tactic. HMS leadership apparently considered the pit crew changes a “reset” for the remaining races.
