South Florida — Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has taken a bold and compassionate step off the ice, announcing a $10 million investment to transform a large estate in South Florida into a comprehensive shelter and resource center for homeless youth.
The shelter, named the Barkov Haven, will offer temporary and transitional housing, educational opportunities, life skills training, and mental health services for youth between the ages of 14 and 24. Located just outside of Fort Lauderdale, the facility is set to open in late 2025 and will house up to 75 residents at a time.
Speaking at a press conference Friday, Barkov, who has quietly contributed to various local causes during his career, said this project was deeply personal to him.
“South Florida has become a second home for me, and I’ve been fortunate in my career,” Barkov said. “But I know many young people here are struggling with things no one should face alone—homelessness, violence, rejection. This shelter is my way of helping create a path forward for them.”
The house, once a private mansion, is being fully renovated to include dorm-style living spaces, classrooms, a cafeteria, therapy offices, and recreation areas. The project will also employ staff trained in trauma-informed care and will partner with local organizations such as Covenant House Florida and United Way Miami to provide wraparound services.
Community leaders have praised Barkov’s commitment, noting the growing issue of youth homelessness in the region. According to the latest data, thousands of young people in South Florida experience homelessness each year, often due to family breakdown, aging out of foster care, or poverty.
“This isn’t just a donation—it’s a legacy,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. “Aleksander Barkov is showing us what true leadership looks like, and the impact will be felt for generations.”
