BREAKING NEWS: Mark Martin’s Reply to Christopher Bell on Adding Horsepower in NASCAR

“Christopher Bell brings up an interesting point when he talks about wanting more horsepower in NASCAR. As someone who spent decades behind the wheel, I understand exactly where he’s coming from. More power means more throttle control, more off-corner finesse, and ultimately, more responsibility in the driver’s hands. That’s the kind of racing many of us came up through — where managing throttle and tire wear separated the good from the great.

But there’s a balance to be had here. NASCAR today is not the same as it was in the ’90s or early 2000s. Safety, cost, and competition have changed the game. More horsepower might make the cars more challenging, but it also brings added risk and cost — things the sport has been working hard to manage.

Still, I agree with Bell in spirit. NASCAR’s best racing happens when the cars are hard to drive and the drivers have to work for every tenth of a second. Maybe it’s not just about raw horsepower, though. Maybe it’s about giving drivers more tools — more throttle response, less downforce, or a tire that falls off more. You want the talent behind the wheel to shine, and sometimes that means giving them a more demanding car.

I respect Bell for speaking up. The current generation has the right to shape the future of this sport. If NASCAR can find a way to give fans better racing and drivers a bigger role in determining the outcome — whether that’s through more horsepower or other changes — then that’s a conversation worth having.”
