There’s been a lot of talk lately about Memphis being “unsafe,” and I feel like it’s time to speak on it—not just as an athlete, but as someone who’s proud to call this city home. Memphis has its challenges, like any other city, but labeling it as unsafe without understanding its heart is unfair. What I’ve seen here goes beyond headlines—this city is full of resilient people, a rich culture, and a deep sense of community.
When people talk about safety, they often ignore the root causes—inequality, lack of opportunity, and underinvestment in certain communities. Instead of writing the city off, we should be investing in it. There are young kids out here with talent, dreams, and drive—they just need the right support. I’ve met people in this city doing incredible work to uplift neighborhoods and create safe spaces, and that deserves more attention than the negativity.
We as athletes have a platform, and I want to use mine to challenge these narratives. Memphis has always embraced me and my teammates with love. It’s a city with soul, passion, and potential—and I’m committed to being part of its growth, not turning my back on it. So when you hear people talk about Memphis being unsafe, ask them what they’re doing to help change that. Because real change comes from understanding, investment, and standing together.
