NHL News: Connor Bedard’s Chicago teammate suffers tournament-ending injury during 2025 IIHF World Championship

NHL News: Connor Bedard’s Chicago Teammate Suffers Tournament-Ending Injury at 2025 IIHF World Championship

The 2025 IIHF World Championship has taken an unfortunate turn for Team USA and the Chicago Blackhawks, as forward Lukas Reichel, a promising young teammate of Connor Bedard, has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a lower-body injury sustained during a preliminary round game against Finland.

Reichel, who had been showcasing strong offensive form throughout the early stages of the tournament, went down awkwardly after an intense battle along the boards in the second period. He was helped off the ice by trainers and did not return to the game. Following evaluation by team doctors, it was confirmed that the injury would sideline him for the rest of the championship, dealing a blow to both Team USA’s forward depth and the Blackhawks’ development hopes for their rising star.

The 22-year-old winger had contributed two goals and three assists in four games, providing a key offensive spark alongside NHL talents like Trevor Zegras and Brady Tkachuk. His chemistry with the top line had been instrumental in helping the U.S. stay competitive in Group B play.

Connor Bedard, who is representing Team Canada in the tournament, expressed his support for Reichel following the news. “It’s tough to see a teammate and friend go down like that,” said Bedard. “Lukas has worked so hard all season and was playing great hockey here. I know he’ll come back stronger.”

Reichel was expected to use the World Championship as a springboard heading into the 2025-26 NHL season, where he’s anticipated to take on a larger role in the Blackhawks’ rebuild alongside Bedard. Chicago’s management will now focus on his recovery timeline, which is currently projected at 6–8 weeks, though more information is expected pending further evaluation upon his return to North America.

Team USA head coach David Quinn lamented the loss of Reichel but remained confident in his squad’s depth. “Lukas brought a lot of skill and energy to our group. It’s unfortunate, but we have guys ready to step up.”

As the tournament continues, both the U.S. team and the Chicago Blackhawks organization will be monitoring Reichel’s recovery closely, hopeful for a full return ahead of training camp later this year.
