As the NASCAR Cup Series heads deeper into the season, the playoff picture continues to evolve, leaving open the intriguing possibility that drivers like Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick, Noah Gragson, Todd Gilliland, and Zane Smith could contend for a Championship 4 spot at Phoenix—even while still needing to qualify on speed or points.

Each of these drivers has shown flashes of brilliance in 2025. Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick, both under the 23XI Racing banner, have had speed on intermediate tracks and superspeedways. Reddick, in particular, has been a consistent top-10 finisher, and Wallace has proven he can race under pressure. If either driver can make a late-season surge or win a pivotal playoff race, Phoenix becomes a real target.

Noah Gragson, in a much-improved setup, has developed steadily in his sophomore season. His aggressive driving style and improved consistency could put him in position to capitalize on chaos in the playoff rounds. Todd Gilliland and Zane Smith—both from smaller teams—face uphill battles but could surprise. Gilliland’s steady hand and Zane’s road-course prowess could earn them clutch points or an unexpected win.

However, the challenge lies in the unknowns: not just performing well enough to reach the Round of 8, but also ensuring they qualify for the race at Phoenix. If any of them face engine penalties, DNFs, or qualification issues late in the season, even a Championship 4 berth wouldn’t guarantee a shot at the title unless they make the Phoenix field.

In a playoff era defined by parity and unpredictability, these five drivers making it to Phoenix would be a storyline to remember—underdogs chasing glory with everything on the line.
