As of 2025, the Tennessee Titans will be celebrating 28 years since their official rebranding from the Houston Oilers to the Tennessee Titans.
The franchise itself dates back much further. The team was originally established in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, one of the eight founding members of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers were based in Houston, Texas, and they played there for nearly four decades. In 1997, the team relocated to Tennessee, initially playing in Memphis for one season as the Tennessee Oilers, and then moving to Nashville in 1998. After two seasons under the “Oilers” name, the franchise was officially renamed the Tennessee Titans in 1999.
The Titans’ first season under the new name was historic. In 1999, they made an incredible run to Super Bowl XXXIV, narrowly losing to the St. Louis Rams in a memorable game that ended just one yard short of a potential game-winning touchdown. That season helped cement the Titans’ identity in Tennessee and build a strong fan base.
So in terms of the “Titans” identity, 2025 marks their 28th year. However, if you consider the franchise’s full history, including their days as the Houston Oilers, the organization will be 65 years old in 2025.
The Titans continue to build on a legacy of resilience, growth, and passionate support. With a new stadium expected in the coming years and a renewed focus on team development, the franchise remains a key pillar of professional sports in Tennessee. As they approach three decades under the Titans banner, the team stands as a symbol of Nashville’s rise as a major sports city and the enduring spirit of football in the South.
